Hi Chaps
Well last week was a tricky one as a number of players were away in Paris , others were skiing and half term and on the injury list. That meant we lost key players like Len, Jamie, Ian , Stuart, Malcolm,Farren,, Malcolm, Andrew,Andy and this was indeed a blow.
However, we still managed to put together 14 on the day with Ben getting fitness OK and Tom Smith coming in at centre and Martin brought Will along on the wing and Mac filled in at scrumhalf so we managed to put a side out.
As it happened Ealing were also short with only 13 players and had suffered in the same way as we did.
With no front row and guys playing out of position it really was great to see how it all seemed to click together and with the extra man over we knew that we should ultimately wear done Ealing and the opportunities to score would occur.
Right from the off our forwards took control with a good catch by Jonathan who made one of his head down and charge at the Ealing forwards.. great support play was obvious throughout the game and handling was excellent with a great deal of inter passing between forwards and outsides. We had Johno fresh from the front row having a go at centre and he put on his usual thrusting game.
The first try try was a cracker by Jonathan who gathered the ball and then there was no stopping as he went straight for the line to bang down our first try. Ealing came back with a vengeance but our defence in every quarter held very firm with good tackles being made and Ealing unable to bridge our defence.
With more forward drives Matt was passed the ball about 20 yards out and with his typical style he made a powerful charge for the line and with a tremendous dive ( take a look at the photos and you will see his try) he went over for our second try. Ben converted.
The second half did see a few injuries and we lost Gary with a head cut and Matt with a hamstring problem.
However, Ben found himself mid field with the ball and made what must be a classic change of pace with a deceptive run through the opposition to put down an individual try which he then converted.
Our line out play worked well and all players had a good game …Tinks was getting full involved and Mac’s passing gave Ben a good platform.
The final try cam from a well worked passing movement in the outsides for Tom in the centre to carve his way through for the final try of the game
The final score 26 .0 to The Bulldogs
Very sporting game and a very good one to watch both sides played well and good ambassadors for the grass level roots of rugby
