Grasshoppers Colts 32 - 12 Bulldogs

Hi chaps

You will find attached a very good range of action photos of the game against Grasshoppers Colts as Tony named the game rather well!!!

We wended our way from The White Swan into no mans land the other side of the Great West Road to the Grasshoppers rather splendid ground and clubhouse and with both lager and bitter always on tap for the visiting side

A very good venue and well worth the 10 minute journey!!!

We had a fair side out but missing a number of key players away in Italy or otherwise not available.

We were short of our usual front row and it was decided to play unopposed scrums right from the word go!

However, The Grasshopper Colt’s game had been called off and their coach said they needed a game.

We were the only team around!!!

O.K. so off we went and we did very well and we must have given them between 15 to 20 years or more per player!!

However the first 10 mins was quite good with good drives and penetration through to their 20 yard line on quite a few occasions

Jamie went down the wing and very nearly got over the try line but just stopped short

The game was very much one that we tried to keep in the forwards as the Grasshopper Colts were very fast, and more to the point rather small to get hold off. But fortunately there were a few of the old players mixed in the side and at least they were tackable and “get at able”

Our forwards did well and numerous base of the scrum drives were made by Big Jonathan, good to have you back again, and we really did make good headway.

So much so that a ball picked up by Johnno in their half gave him the chance to drive at the opposition and with a few side steps and support he went over for a very good and well earned try.

Our forwards worked hard with both Matt and Peter operating a high tackle rate and Matt making good drives into the opposition

Our back row played with good commitment with Dave U, Johnno and Jonathan showing up well

Len again lead by good example and was in the thick of it all the time with a number of good forward charges that are very much his trade mark .A good call by Len in a loose maul and the ball went to Matt for a good 10 yard drive and shove over the line to put us in for another 5 points!

Simon also worked hard and all in all we had a good forward game

Outside it was a big problem and the opposition had fast ball and more to the point fast small young backs.

With Roger at 10 and Jamie and Dan at centre we had a good basic defence line that worked well with Liam in one wing and Clarkie making a good return on the other wing and both of them tidying up with good defence work.

Andy gave a good performance at 15.

The opposition started to use the sun and their very fast backs. We had worked hard to contain their constant attacks but tiredness and fitness and more to the point age started to take its toll and the result was a win to the Grasshopper Colts

Every player enjoyed the game and it was a good game to watch and to take part in

Final score Bulldogs 12 try by Johnno and Matt and conversion by Roger. Grasshopper Colts 32 points
